Update #5: Site Visit #2 | October 2021

After several months of research and analysis, Atlas has narrowed down concepts for each focus area (Housing, Workforce Development, and Key Building Revitalization).

Sparta has selected the following initiatives:

  • Housing: Blighted Home Renovation Strategy
  • Workforce Development: Development of a Construction Bootcamp Program
  • Key Building Revitalization: Cultural Center

West Jefferson has selected the following initiatives:

  • Housing: Comprehensive Housing Strategy
  • Workforce Development: Development of a 3D Printing Bootcamp Program
  • Key Building Revitalization: Funding Strategy for Mt. Jefferson Child Development Center

Megan Grubb will be returning to NW NC the week of October 25th to meet with specific stakeholders for these initiatives.

Update #4: Research Phase | June 2021

Atlas Community Studios visited Sparta and West Jefferson at the end of May. We were able to meet with several groups in each community (education leaders, business owners, local artists, realtors/developers, etc.) and had great conversations in regards to housing, workforce development, and amenity creation. Public surveys are now LIVE (see here) for residents of each community to complete and provide feedback.

Once the surveys close on June 30th, we will analyze the feedback given and continue our research into programs/models/methods that will meet Sparta and West Jefferson’s needs. Once this is completed, a second trip to both communities will also be planned.

Update #3: Public Survey & Site Visit #1 | May 2021

The Atlas Community Studios team will visit Sparta and West Jefferson on May 24-25, 2021 to meet with community leaders and local citizens to gather additional public input.

The public survey will be posted soon.

Update #2: Public Input | April 2021

The foundation of an action plan is feedback and input from the community. Three virtual visioning sessions have occurred, one with the Steering Committee and two with the public. These sessions focused on gathering information related to housing, workforce development, and building revitalization. Our goal is to generate a statistically significant amount of responses from local residents to ensure the action plan is representative of each community.

Update #1: Steering Committee Holds First Meeting | March 2021

The Atlas Community Studios team created an online survey for Steering Committee members to provide their input on Northwest North Carolina’s assets, challenges, and most important improvements that can be made in Sparta and West Jefferson. They survey focused on three key topics: Housing, Workforce Development, and Key Building Revitalization.
